Pilbara Volatile Substance Use
Puntukurnu Aboriginal Medical Services (PAMS), in partnership with BHP Iron Ore Pty Ltd, delivers the Pilbara Volatile Substance Use (VSU) Support Program to reduce volatile substance use and strengthen wellbeing in Martu and Nyiyaparli communities.
The program takes a culturally informed, community-led approach to prevention, early intervention and support for young people, families and communities impacted by VSU.
What we offer
The VSU Support Program aims to:
- Reduce volatile substance use within communities
- Provide clinical awareness, intervention and ongoing support
- Support young people and families affected by, or at risk of, VSU
- Deliver culturally appropriate programs in partnership with Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa (KJ), including on-Country camps and skill-based activities
- Support community-led management plans to eliminate VSU
- Promote healthier lifestyles, reduce substance-related illness and preventable chronic disease
Who can access this service?
This service is available to:
- Youth and families within Martu and Nyiyaparli communities
- Individuals engaging in, or at risk of engaging in, volatile substance use
- Community members or agencies seeking support or reporting VSU incidents

Service hours
Service delivery varies based on community needs and activities. Program staff generally operate during standard business hours, with flexibility for community events and urgent responses. VSU incidents can be reported at any time via email.
Funding partner
This program is proudly funded by BHP Iron Ore Pty Ltd in partnership with Puntukurnu Aboriginal Medical Service (PAMS). The program runs from March 2022 to March 2026.
