On Monday 25th January 2021, three Pilbara Aboriginal health service providers - Mawarnkarra Health Services (MHS), Wirraka Maya Health Service Aboriginal Corporation (WMHSAC) and Puntukurnu Aboriginal Medical Service (PAMS) - came together to graciously receive funding awarded by Lotterywest.
PAHA aims to improve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health outcomes in the Pilbara by leveraging the collective resources, knowledge and community relationships from all three organisations.
The Lotterywest cheque was presented by the Member for Pilbara, Kevin Michel MLA to the PAHA Directors Richard Ansey (MHS) and Nora Cooke (WMHSAC). The presentation was also attended by WMHSAC Chief Executive Officer, June Councillor and PAMS Chief Executive Officer, Robby Chibawe.
Kevin Michel MLA said he was honored to present a $470,800 Lotterywest grant, on behalf of the State Government, towards the establishment of PAHA.
“PAHA will provide regional data, solutions and opportunities that will directly impact the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families in the Pilbara region through the cooperation and coordination of the alliance groups,” said Mr. Michel MLA.
PAMS CEO, Robby Chibawe said he was excited to launch the new initiative as it will benefit Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as well as the wider community.
“This is a great initiative that will pull together expertise from each of our bases in Roebourne, Hedland and Newman. Together, we will provide a strong, united voice that will advocate for and deliver improved health outcomes for the Pilbara community.”
“Improving the health of Indigenous Australians living in rural and remote areas is a primary focus for PAMS. With the formation of PAHA, we have taken a giant leap towards bridging health inequities and enhancing patient outcomes,”
