Newman

Puntukurnu Aboriginal Medical Service has its administrative hub based in Newman and a small number of staff are located there. The administrative hub provides the overall management of the organisation, undertakes the operational activities associated with logistics and travel and supports the clinical services in the communities.

Newman was established in 1966 (originally called Mount Newman) and is located approximately 1,200 km north of Western Australia's capitol Perth. These days, Newman has a population of roughly 4,500 people (as measured in the 2016 census) and is the closest town to many of the Western Desert communities of WA. The town was established by Mt. Newman Mining Co. Pty Ltd as a company town to support the development of iron ore deposits in the nearby Mount Whaleback. The mining company developed into what we now know as BHP and mining still plays an important part in the town of Newman, with BHP being the major employer.
